In case you haven’t noticed the activity under the gold dome, the Georgia State Legislature is in session. You might be wondering what your nonprofit organization can do to influence the legislature. Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status should be familiar with the IRS restrictions on their lobbying activities (and the lack of restrictions on advocacy). Nonprofits that are involved in lobbying should also be aware of the IRS Form 501(h) election. Finally, nonprofits should familiarize themselves with current rules on registering as a lobbyist in Georgia. Note that these rules may very well change with the ethics legislation currently under consideration. To get you started, we’ve pulled together some of our educational materials on lobbying for nonprofits.
